Rome Guide: Part III

After we spent our morning and early afternoon at the Vatican, we made our way to the Pantheon. However, being the gelato monster that I am, I was aching for some dessert after lunch. The heavens answered and we were met by this incredible parlour. I chose pistachio stracciatella, raspberry and hazelnut chocolate. A had pistachio, chocolate and hazelnut.

The Pantheon is the best preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings as it has been in continuous use throughout its history since the 7th century. Today, the Pantheon is used as a Catholic church. Two kings are also buried there; Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I as well as Umberto's Queen, Margherita. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.

Closing time came, so we all scurried out onto Piazza della Rotonda and were serenaded by this talented man. He sang everything from Prince to Pink Floyd and got an impressive crowd. Rome has a number of talents performing on the streets but he was by far the most memorable.

We strolled our way through the narrow streets of Rome and ended up at Piazza Navona.

It is built on the Stadium of Domitian in 1st century AD and then followed to be an open space of the stadium. It is here where Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fountain of the Four Rivers, lies. Collectively it represents the four major rivers of the four continents through which papal authority had spread; the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges and the Rio de la Plata. The roads of Rome mapped out our route for us so we obliged and followed our "yellow" brick road. Luckily we did as we were told otherwise we would not have found this gem!

There were even more musicians and every corner seemed to have ravishing churches/ cathedrals. I wasn't allowed to take photos so I guess you have to try and get your booty to Rome as soon as you can to see them all yourself! The evening came sooner than we liked so we headed back slowly and tried to soak in as much of Rome as we could on our way back, ate too much pasta for dinner and went straight to sleep. Another fabulous day in Rome. The following day (A's 25th!) will be posted up on the blog soon. Ciao for now!
